There is no better feeling for a sportsperson than returning to the place where it all began. For most, such an opportunity is rare, but R. Ashwin is one of the fortunate few.
When Chennai Super Kings brought him back for ₹9.75 crore in the mega auction for the 2025 Indian Premier League, he returned to his home turf — where he first honed his skills and eventually became India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests (537 scalps), trailing only the legendary Anil Kumble.
Speaking at the Rotary International District 3234 annual event ‘Sanghamitra,’ the 38-year-old, who was felicitated with a Lifetime Achievement award for his contributions to the sport, said: “Coming back here was a dream come true. It wasn’t just a happy moment; it speaks volumes about the owners and what the city means to me.
“The most important thing for me is that the learning ground is CSK — that’s exactly where I took off from, and I learned some valuable lessons here. I first burst onto the scene from here, and then I went on to achieve much greater things than I had ever imagined for myself. Even after moving to different teams, enjoying their vibes, and learning new things, there is nothing quite like home”.
